Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The VCU College of Humanities and Sciences depends on the generosity of our alumni and friends to accomplish our goal. The Major Gift Officer plays a vital role in reaching our goal. The purpose of this position is to plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive major gifts program to realize gift income, both cash and deferred and endowed and current, from private sources for the College of Humanities and Sciences and its affiliated schools, departments, and programs.
The Major Gifts Officer will develop a fundraising and engagement plan for donors over $25,000 and will carry a portfolio. Annual performance reviews will be based on written, mutually approved operating plans and metrics developed in partnership with the College’s Senior Director of Development and the VP Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) office.
The Major Gifts Officer will:
• Manage a portfolio of up 100-125 prospects.
• Solicit major gifts through meetings via face-to-face, telephone, or online conference appointments; and personalized mailings in order to obtain first-time or increased major donor contributions. 
• Advise faculty and administrators of appropriate fund raising strategies in order to assist them in securing private funding.
• Provide assistance to donors regarding tax laws, policies and procedures.
• Maintain prospect records and contact reports in the official database in order to facilitate repeated donations and establish gift histories.
• Track metrics in the official database for accountability and evaluation.
• Research, plan and develop materials such as articles, press releases, and letters of appreciation in order to support fundraising, stewardship, and donor recognition programs.
• Resolve concerns and challenges in partnership with respective administration/faculty/staff to honor donors and maintain a positive image of the College.
• Recruit, train and manage volunteers to partner in the solicitation process.
• Serve on the College’s development leadership team or other committees of importance.
• Develop integrated fundraising plans that support the College’s mission and strategic goals.
• Integrate activities with DAR and other schools’ development and alumni programs.
• Professionally handle confidential donor/alumni/university information.
• Educate and train faculty on fundraising practices and College priorities.
• Coordinate external communications with alumni, donors, and stakeholders as they relate to giving, and in partnership with the College of Humanities and Sciences’ and central DAR Communications office.


Minimum Hiring Standards

• Significant, demonstrated experience in fundraising, public relations, marketing or a related field, or progressively responsible professional experience in higher education development or a related field.
• Demonstrated experience in facilitating leadership annual fund or major gift programs.
• Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving.
• Must be able to travel involving automobile and/or airplane. Overnight and long-distance travel will be necessary.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, execute and close personal solicitations, having a demonstrated track record of successful gift solicitations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree required in related field and/or equivalent related work experience.


Preferred Hiring Standards

• Minimum of 5 years professional experience in fundraising, public relations, marketing or a related field, or 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education development or a related field.
• Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or similar certification is a plus.
• Master’s Degree or work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree is preferred.
• Deep appreciation for the mission and aspirations of VCU.
• Desire to play a meaningful role in the life of VCU and to share in the extended community.
• Experience working in a large, complex university or nonprofit settings.
• Professional credibility required to engage and leverage senior administrative leadership, deans, faculty, volunteer leadership and other key stakeholders in building a successful campaign and organization.
• Management skills that are consistent with bringing out the best in the team and instills pride and ownership in a team effort.
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a professional employee at VCU.
• Personal attributes: self-starter, honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, team player, follow through and commitment, attention to detail, organization, self-confidence and broad-based fund raising experience.
• Personal commitment to the fund raising industry as evidenced through work ethic and aspiration to best practices.

Anticipated Hiring Range $70,000 - $80,000 (Commensurate with Experience)
